HISTORY OF VIKING BANK
THE VIKING BANK STORY

The origins of Viking Bank began in April 1981, when a group of Alexandria residents brought Viking Savings Association into legal existence. Business was first transacted as a state-chartered mutual savings association in an office at 504 Broadway. It was the first such charter issued in Minnesota by the Commerce Commission (Banking Division) in over twenty years. Viking Savings Association was converted to a Federal Charter in November 1982 to take advantage of increased services that could be offered under the deregulation of banking institutions. By December 1984, the bank needed additional space and moved to the old Pete’s Super Value building at 1311 Broadway. In October 2007, Viking Savings sold to another group of local owners, ensuring the bank would remain independent and locally-owned and operated. The name has since changed to Viking Bank to better reflect our wide range of banking services. To this day, Viking Bank remains the only bank chartered in the City of Alexandria, our home and headquarters. We are, in the truest sense, a locally-owned and managed bank.

We are blessed to be part of a vibrant community that has grown with us. In Spring 2016 we began construction on an expanded location to better serve our customers, and in January 2017 we relocated from 1311 Broadway to 4277 Dakota Street. While we have an updated look and many new technology features, Viking Bank continues to be committed to our outstanding customer service provided by the same great staff and local ownership that our customers and community know and love. In December 2019, Viking Bank again had the opportunity to grow, this time by expanding to a second location through the acquisition of the First State Bank of Ashby. This addition of a second location is an exciting chance to offer a more flexible banking experience to our customers in Alexandria, Ashby and surrounding communities. We now have teams in two convenient locations ready to assist you on your banking journey.
